Biographical Information on Laurie
Mackenzie
Laurie Mackenzie is a chef and a passionate scholar of Latin American
cuisines. She studied Latin American Studies at UC Santa Cruz and attended
the Cordon Bleu Culinary School in Paris. She has worked at the Hayes
Street Grill and Restaurant Carta in San Francisco and was the chef at
the Headland's Center for the Arts in the Marin Headlands. She was the
Kitchen and Program Manager at La Cocina Community Kitchen, a non-profit
food business incubator for low-income and immigrant women for 2 years.
In 1987, Laurie lived in Nicaragua for 6 months, cooking with women in
their homes, in restaurants and in marketplaces. She travels frequently
to Mexico and has led culinary tours to Oaxaca and of San Francisco's
vibrant Mission District. She studied with Rick Bayless at the Culinary
Institute of America. Laurie taught students at Cesar Chavez Elementary
School the joys of tasting and cooking with organic, seasonal produce
with the Market Cooking for Kids program and has taught numerous classes
on Mexican cooking at Sur la Table, San Francisco City College and Encantada
Gallery of Fine Arts. She has been a Mission district resident for 15
years.
